Have you ever wondered how shirts and onesies of newborns could be so expensive, and yet so plain? Those that have designs are even more expensive than the plain ones and it is only practical that creating or designing onesies and shirts yourself. This is a wonderful way to pass the time and save money on baby clothes that will only last a few weeks.
Here are some ideas on how to decorate newborn shirts and onesies yourself without breaking the budget. You can do this at home after all the chores are done and have nothing else to do but watch TV, or stare out in the garden. If you know how to sew, iron, draw or even crochet, this is just the thing to do.
If you sew, get some plain shirts and onesies and start sketching out designs using a washable pencil, or you can just place the material over a nice print and trace out the design. Get some yarn and trace out the design using backstitch. This will serve as the background of the design. Fill out the spaces with satin stitches of the colors desired.
Not up to using characters or sketches? Easy, lazy daisy stitch flowers on one side of the shirt or onesie. Use Cretan stitches for leaves and for the bulbs, use bullion stitch. You could always just free flow stitch the designs or you can sketch on a paper the layout of the flowers and go from there.
Another way to decorate the shirts is to crochet the edges with fine thread crochet laces. Use gauge 18 or 16 for fine threads. Try to avoid yarns as this will not complement the delicate material. Crochet on the edges of the shirts or onesie.
If you don’t have sewing or crocheting talents, you could always just buy some iron on designs. Look over the various designs in bookstores or crafts stores. Once you have chosen the designs, prepare the area where they are to be ironed on. Ironing a dozen designs on twelve shirts can be accomplished in less than two hours.
Drawing the design using fabric pens also is a good idea. There are inks now that when dry and ironed, can bulk up for texture. You can also fill in spaces between the sketch areas to color in the characters that you chose.
If you a multitalented, you could always run wild and combine all methods into your baby clothes. This way, you can while away the time creatively and calmly. Don’t wait too far along your due date; you might not have enough time to finish all that you want to put into the shirts.
Moms can do these activities themselves, or if there is a baby shower, this can be a great gift to give your friend who is expecting a baby soon. Prepare at least two dozen shirts for the baby to wear in the first weeks of its life and be proud that you not only saved money, but used your own creativity to make an adorably designed layette.
