7 Alternatives to Flower Bouquets: Make Yours a Standout!

May 28th, 2011

Most women picture roses at their weddings…but what if you don’t like roses? Or are allergic? What if you just want to be different?

Sure, there are other flowers, but what about other items? Have you ever considered truly being a standout bride by tossing the proverbial bouquet in exchange for something a little more unique?

If you truly want to make a statement at your wedding, consider some creative alternatives to the traditional floral bouquet. And no, I’m not talking about silk flowers.

Vintage brooches are a great statement piece, especially if you’re a bride who wants LOTS of bling. Where can you find them? Check out second hand stores, thrift shops, even Goodwill! As long as it sparkles, it will work! This is also a great way to involve your friends and family-tell them your plans, and see what they come up with.

To make the bouquet, use a standard bouquet handle filled with floral foam and stick the brooches into the foam to form the shape you want. You’ll DEFINITELY turn heads.

Another consideration? Silk or sateen fans. They’re elegant, timeless, and if the venue gets toasty, quite practical. They’ll also make fun pictures-open, closed, in use…the possibilities are endless!

An added bonus? You can adorn them with individual baubles that show each attendant’s (and the bride’s!) personality and they can double as gifts for your bridesmaid. How frugal of you!

Not one for sparkles or fans? Consider twigs or branches. No, I’m not crazy. Think pussywillows, maples, even thicker grasses would work.

If you’re going for a truly outdoor feel, this can be a great alternative to the traditional bouquet, and very unexpected. Dress up your twig collection with a pretty ribbon, or consider tying them with a faux pearl necklace for a special touch.

To keep the bouquet look without the sparkles and sticks, consider buttons, which come in all colors and sizes, or even wooden or paper flowers. These options are not only unique, but allow you to customize each arrangement to your liking.

Do you have crafty bridesmaids? Then have them help you make your bouquet? Want to buy one? Check Etsy!

Are you crafty? Consider covering foam globes with fabric, ribbon, or a combination and adding a ribbon or rope to hold them by. You can even add pearlized or rhinestone pins for a little bit of glitz.

You may also want to consider coin purses or clutches made to match your wedding theme and colors. They’re functional, look polished, and make wonderful receptacles for the necessary tissues that everyone will need.

For a truly whimsical feel, especially outdoors, consider parasols. They’ll give your wedding a truly unique look (think Gone With The Wind), and help keep the sun at bay. The great thing about parasols? You can pretty much choose your type: paper, fabric, lace…there are endless possibilities!

The most important thing to remember is that you need to follow your heart. It’s YOUR wedding-just because flowers are traditional doesn’t mean that they’re necessary.
