John Deere Americana Birthday Party

July 30th, 2010

Once that little girl or boy loves the land, the only theme you should consider is a John Deere birthday! This theme brings a truckload of Americana along, and is quite the patriotic one to boot.

The John Deere website is a treasure trove of party materials. There are also free downloads available as well as tons of pictures you can use for decorations and such so you can create your own. Write all the details of the party on the invite and ask the kids to dress up for the theme.

John Deere only comes in yellow and green, so those are your only choices for this celebration. Use light and dark green to make it more interesting. Streamers and balloons are the basic decorations here. Bunch up balloons in the different colors and tie them around the room. Accent the balloons with a big yellow ribbon to make them stand out. Put up some posters of John Deere or farms on the walls to add a sense of place. Place some plants all over the room as accents.

Can you bring a tractor to the party area? A picture of each child in the tractor taken when they arrive becomes party of the party activities. If you can, develop the picture right away so you can send it with their favors at the end of the party.

The table can be covered with a green tablecloth and a yellow table scarf. Why not use some grass colored excelsior and a model John Deere tractor to recreate a working field? Set in some dried yellow flowers to complete the look. Have green and yellow tableware at each child’s place and accent each napkin with a bouquet of dried flowers.

Use the same colors for the table where the cake will be put. Decorate the table with dried flowers and paper ribbon bows. Make the cake an interesting one with a John Deere toy on a green frosting field. Use shredded wheat to simulate rolls of hay piled to one side. Cover the sides of the cake with green and yellow M&Ms and finish it off with miniature shredded wheat pieces on the cake board instead of the usual frosting ribbon.

Serve comfort food at this party. Cold fried chicken drumettes, cottage fries, vegetable sticks with a cheesy dip, and baked beans served with biscuits would be something any adult and kid would eat. Do you have a favorite comfort food? Add it to the menu! Anything goes here. Why not have a personal sized apple pie with creamy melted Cheddar cheese and a dollop of ice cream for dessert? Or that campfire favorite: a melty, creamy Lots More made with chocolate grahams, a melted square of chocolate and a toasted marshmallow rolled in toasted coconut?

Give out bandannas and matching colored straw hats as favors. Add a green or yellow pop of Rock Candy plus some stickers and note pads of John Deere to that and your favors are complete.
