September 22nd, 2010

People are of three opinions when it comes to a first birthday celebrations. Some see it as a big celebration where all and sundry should be invited while others prefer a small family gathering marked by a pretty cake and some ice cream. And then there are those that take the middle ground where the birthday is celebrated by a more intimate party with close friends and family make up the guest list. However, no matter the size of the party, you’ll need to take note of a few 1st birthday party planning tips.

Although it sounds a little strange, a large party could mean you’ll forgo plenty of small details even if you’re budget is bigger. A smaller celebration means a more closely-guarded budget and lots more creativity needed because of it.

It’s really of utmost importance that the parents express their child’s interests at the birthday celebration. While it would only be through pictures or videos that they could see what took place, it would be wonderful for them to know that the theme was chosen because it was something they liked (or maybe still like) at the time.

Ask yourself a few questions when planning out the celebration. Is there a color that your child is drawn to? Is there something that they are particularly fascinated with, maybe a favorite book or TV show? What kind of food do they like to eat? What’s their favorite drink? These answers should be the basis of that party.

Having their own birthday cake will make it easier for the parents to keep them safe from the candle flame. A prettily decorated cupcake would be a perfect size for them to eat all on their own, which is a moment that should be preserved for posterity in pictures!

Your child himself will be the theme of the celebration, which would immediately help you with the choices you have to make. And think beyond the two-hour party when choosing the décor. While some things could be disposables, like the plates and napkins, the big-ticket items should be something that you can use again. When one young mother was planning her child’s luau-themed first birthday celebration, the tablecloths that were used were all sarongs in Hawaiian prints and a Hawaiian quilt covered the gift table. These sarongs found uses afterward as light blankets for her little girl and the quilt now rests on her bed.

A quick change can come from crepe paper streamers and colorful balloons. Just make sure that the colors of the decorations are complementary or it will just look messy. One way to neaten your color choices is to stick to a favorite color scheme. And you don’t need to limit it to only three; five to seven colors that go with each other will make for a festive celebration. Just repeat the colors everywhere to make the area seem pulled together. And don’t neglect the floor when decorating, since babies spend so much time there! A play area lined with colorful foam mats and large exercise balls would suit children of this age perfectly.
