How to Make Baby Shower Bows Step-by-Step

December 13th, 2010

Do you want to know an easy way how to make something look really festive? Simple, just tie a bow around it. That’s why baby shower bows are really found all over. While they do look like the usual gift bow, these are usually not made of the more sturdy and wide satin ribbons but from baby ribbons, or sheer organza ribbons that make the bow look extremely delicate. You’ll also often find a decoration at the center of the bow, something jeweled or baby-related.

Bows can be purchased, of course, but why would you want to buy something that is quite easy to make – one you know how. You simply need to follow a few steps to get your perfect bow each time you loop the ribbon. With a bit of practice, you can literally do it with your eyes closed.

The most basic baby shower bow is normally used to decorate something and just have two regular loops and two streamers. Cut a length of decorative ribbon that you’ll need to finish off that object. Locate the precise center and form two loops on each side.

Cross the loops over each other, making them in the shape of an “X.” The bow is formed when the loop behind is folded over the one in front and pulled through the opening that was made below the “X.” Pull the streamers to adjust the bow to the right size. Arrange the ribbons so that the right sides are on display. Once everything is set, tug firmly on the loops to tighten it and prevent it from loosening. Neaten the edges of the ribbon.

If a slip knot is necessary because you need to tie the ribbon around something, like a gift, study the two streamers. Make a loop on the streamer that is pointing downward and put that loop over the other streamer that you’ve formed into a loop. The back loop should go over and through, like the last time. Adjust the ribbon, and neaten the tails.

You can combine ribbons in different sizes and colors to change the way the bow looks. The neatest look is when you use the same type of ribbon to make a bow like this. Bows using two different kinds of ribbon, like organza and satin, usually don’t look good unless their colors are perfectly matched.

Another common baby shower bow has multiple loops instead of just two. It does look hard, but it is actually very simple to make. You’ll need to start with a yard of ribbon. Soft and shiny ribbon, like organza or satin, seem to look best with this type of bow.

Starting from one “tail,” leave enough for the tail and then make a small loop in the size you need. In a figure-of-eight motion, gradually increasing the size of the loops, the lower it gets. Once the ribbon is all looped, hold it all together with a few twists of 28-gauge florist’s wire.

Arrange the loops evenly while fanning it out and twisting lightly. Cut the streamers’ ends nicely to make them look neat. Secure to where it needs to go with the wire.
