Does Fish Oil Really Make Kids Smarter?

October 25th, 2011

Do you remember the months of your pregnancy? All of the supplements you took and the steps that you had to complete in order to make sure that your little one is born perfectly healthy?

New studies show that some of the steps that ladies undertake during their pregnancy could be inefficient. Some of the supplements that have long been considered vital for the health and well-being of the baby turn out to be less beneficial than previously considered.

One of the popular tips that pregnant ladies receive is to take fish oil supplements during the nine months. Fish oil is believed to be very important for the formation of the fetus. In addition, some theories state that fish oil has the potential to make kids smarter.

A new study, however, proves that there is no connection between the intelligence of the child and the fish oil supplements that the mom-to-be took during her pregnancy, Reuters Health reports. The study breaks down an old belief concerning the omnipotence of fish oil.

The Norwegian study examined the IQ of six-year-olds. The researchers had difficulties finding a difference between the kids whose mom took fish oil supplements and the other children participating in the survey.

Results of the study appeared in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The kids performed similarly on all the tests that researchers used to establish their intelligence quotient.

These findings, however, do not diminish the importance of fish oil. The fatty acids that it and other sea foods contain play crucial role for the proper formation of the fetus and its health.

Many studies are carried out to discover the importance and role that nutrients and supplements play during pregnancy. While some are undoubtedly important, others remain questionable.

Many researchers believe that the diet of the child after it is born plays equally important role for the formation of intelligence and vital organs. Genetic factors will also play a role, outweighing the effects of important nutrients.

An Australian study establishes a connection between fish oil taken during pregnancy and limb coordination in newborns. Kids of ladies who took the supplement during their pregnancy have better eye-limb coordination.

Some researchers believe that parts of the important nutrients that fish oil contains get lost after the passage through the placenta. This fact diminishes the importance of the supplement tremendously.

Many medics will advice ladies to take fish oil and other supplements during their pregnancy. Some of these additives are certainly questionable. Whether they benefit mom-to-be and baby or are part of the pharmaceutical industry is still to be discovered.

A balanced diet cannot be replaced by the intake of supplements. Folic acid is one of the additives that is exceptionally important during pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins are considered rather beneficial, as well.

You certainly want to guarantee the health of your child. Making informed choices is important, when it comes down to choosing some supplements over others. Be careful and know what your supplement pills contain. Otherwise, you may be spending money on something that is virtually inefficient.
