Meat Substitute Created from Human Feces

July 15th, 2011

If you are nibbling on something in front of the computer, you should probably put it down before you start reading this article. A scientist from Japan named Mitsyuki Ikeda has discovered a way to turn human feces into a meat substitute.

Naturally, the scientist is turning the waste into something edible through the extraction of proteins. He then adds soy, flavors and other ingredients to turn human feces into something ‘palatable.’

Sewage mud is utilized to make this yummy burger ingredient. Ikeda was asked to find a way to utilize all of the human waste produced in Japan. He thought that the large amount of proteins found in sewage mud could be transformed into something edible.

Ikeda discovered a technology that extracts the proteins from feces and turns those into a dense mass that could be utilized as meat substitute. Apart from the fact that it is made from feces, the product looks rather far from delicious.
Currently, the price of poop-made meat is higher than that of traditional piece of meat. Ikeda believes that as the technology is mastered and the artificial meat is released on the market, its price is very likely to start decreasing.

Poop-made meat contains less fat than the traditional meat and the Japanese scientist claims that it is much healthier. In addition, this solution is environmentally-friendly and a great opportunity to put waste products to use.

Ikeda confesses that the psychological barrier may interfere with the popularity of his product. After all, how many people do you know that will be willing to sample a hamburger that is made of sewage mud? The manner in which Ikeda has transformed human feces into a type of food is probably an excellent demonstration of the manner in which good intentions can go very, very wrong.

Just think about it. People are certain to stay away from a burger made of human feces. Certainly, the burgers we eat currently are miles away from the incredible taste of real meat. A feces-burger, however, will be something hard to swallow, no pun intended.

Ikeda’s idea looks very impractical, even absurd. Waste could be utilized in many other ways – it could become fertilizer or it could serve as a form of alternative fuel. The production of food from human feces, however, seems like taking scientific experimentation a step too far.

There may come a day when the resources of planet Earth are depleted and the human race would be forced to start looking for alternative types of foods. Until that day arrives, it is very likely that 99.9 percent of all people will stick to foods that have not originated from feces or any other waste products.

Ikeda’s invention is something praiseworthy, as the technology may have serious application in the future. It could be even more successful if the scientist starts looking for an alternative source of proteins.

How do you feel about Ikeda’s invention? Is it something to praise or you are probably having difficulties accepting such alternative uses of human feces?
