Bring on the Bling 1st Birthday Party!

July 30th, 2010

There are just little girls that are attracted to bling in any way, shape, and form, and that could be a great theme for her first birthday party! It’s something that’s not a usual choice, but if the baby loves it, why not?

Set the mood for the party by making your invitations as blingy as possible. Use a metallic pen to add the shiny accents, glue on rhinestones, then jazz everything up with glittery ribbons. It’s best to limit the colors to two and one metallic accent so it doesn’t look tacky. A bling party centered on turquoise and silver would have invitations printed on turquoise colored card with the capital letters in glittery silver. Add a few white and aqua rhinestones to a corner and everything sealed up with a metallic aqua bow. Add a pinch of “fairy dust” to the envelope with clear glitter.

You could choose to add another color to this color scheme, too. A rich chocolate brown or a metallic bronze would be safe without being tacky. Turquoise and chocolate brown balloons could be decorated with silvery swirls done with a metallic pen, some glue, and silver glitter. Tone it down with non-metallic accents of paper tissue pompoms and lanterns in brown and aqua. Add a bit of sparkle using fishing line to hang crystals from the ceiling.

Cover the kids’ table with an aqua tablecloth and create a centerpiece of sparkly candy by using rock sugar pops tinted in brown and aqua blue, kisses in aqua and silver foil, and M&Ms in light blue and light and dark brown. It’s best to put edible and non-toxic bling in front of kids as it seems to be something they can’t resist! Use aqua and dark brown tableware and accent the napkins with a big, floppy bow of silver ribbon.

Bling up the table that displays the cake, though. Use a sparkly silver cloth to cover it up and center the cake on the table. A fun touch is to surround the cake with mini cupcakes covered with fluffy aqua frosting, silver dragees, and sanding sugar for sparkle. Make a mini cake for the candle swathed in aqua fondant and “quilted” with silver dragees as the metallic heads. The designs on the balloons can be copied on the cake with edible silver dust, lemon juice, and a clean artist’s brush. Use a silver candle on top and surround it with rock candy.

Don’t bring the luxe to the food! Make it all kid-friendly – mini burgers, pasta, cocktail sausage sandwiches, fruit chunks with a yogurt dip, and thimble cookies are perfect. The grown-ups don’t need to get stuck with the kiddie food if you offer them a deli platter accompanied by a hearty salad and a glass of wine or fruit juice punch.

Stuff your goody bags with the sparkly stuff. Rock candy or pop rings provide the sweet while blingy costume jewelry bracelets provide the sparkle. Look at glow in the dark stuff and metallic crayons, too. Keep it light and sparkly.
