How to Make a Towel Cake

July 30th, 2010

A mother to be needs all the help she can receive when it comes to baby essentials. Never mind that it is a first, second, or even third child, baby essentials like layettes, towels, washcloths and others are desperately needed. Presenting the mother-to-be with any of these packed in their original packaging may be the norm, but for others, making the gift look different is a way to express their excitement for the arrival of a new baby. A good way to present towels to the new mother is by making a towel cake, or towels folded in such a way that they resemble a cake.

To make it look extra special, think of using bath towels instead of the regular sized ones, hand towels and face towels. Two of each will be able to make a three tiered cake. Complete the materials by getting ready pearl headed straight pins, ribbons, laces, cloth flowers and other decorations that take your fancy. These will be used to decorate the cake. You can also choose to use baby toys and small sized toiletries like those samples in the store that you can get. For the towels, choose those which are thick and luxuriant, rather than the thin and plain towels. This is a special cake after all.

The first thing you have to do is to unfold the towels and then fold them over each one half lengthwise. Then, fold these into half. Starting from the untidy end made of the edges, not the rounded corners of the folded towel roll these tightly until it reaches the rounded edges. Make sure that the ends are tidy and neat. Place this folded piece on the same sized towel that had been pre-folded, attach with the straight pins to prevent from unraveling. Roll tightly the rolled towel into the second towel. Again, secure with pins. Do these for each of the different sized towels.

You have now three separate tiers. Decorate these to your creative hearts’ desires. Place bows, ribbons, small toys, anything that would make it interesting.

To make the cake interesting, you could actually use different colors for the three sizes to suit the theme of this particular baby shower that you are going to. So, if the theme is that of a rubber ducky, then colors of aqua and yellow would do nicely. If it is a rainbow theme, then you can combine any colors of the rainbow, your choice.

Stack the layers, bath towels at the base, hand towels on the second tier, and the face towel on the top tier. Secure very well with straight pins. Make sure that only the peal heads are showing, don’t let any sharp points accidentally poke anyone. Pin the pins down, not sideways or up. Give the stack a little shake, secure again if needed.

You can make it look gaudy, fun or full of toys, the point is, this is a fun cake, make it look fun. As an afterthought, at the top of the top tier, you can place a plastic toy baby or even a teddy bear that is small enough to sit on it comfortably.

If you are going to travel with the cake to the party, make sure to keep it secure by placing it in an attractive box like a huge hat box which you can tie a ribbon and a big bow at the top. You can also place a prettily written well wishes card. If it is in a box, you can travel without worrying that the towel cake would get dirtied up or anything else.
