Sprightly Spring Baby Shower

September 24th, 2010

Everything naturally becomes more lively once it turns to Spring. Everything starts to bound about, happy with the feeling of new life, and little babies are no exception to that rule!

While spring is the traditional time for a new birth, you may also find that there are lots of representations of babies in their own right. It’s the perfect time of the year to have your own little one.

Spring is represented by lots of impressions like new flowers and plants with new leaves, little chicks in nests, the mass birth of animal babies, and the popular religious festival – Easter. You can choose any of these as a consummate Spring baby shower theme.

Why not have a spring garden as the theme for your spring baby shower? A vision of new life bursting out all around you is extremely evocative of a pregnant woman about to give birth as well.

Spring green and pastels would be perfect for the color scheme. You could choose lemon yellow, baby pink, soft blue, and lavender as your accent colors. Why not dress the table in a spring green cloth to simulate grass and have each place setting in a different color scheme to make it look like a garden in bloom. Have little silver vases around, each with a different colored posy for a sweet but lively table.

Why not carry the theme through to the buffet table as well? You can scatter whole flower heads in between the platters of food arranged on the table. Tie strips of colored tulle into fluffy bows and fasten them to the sides of the table to make it more decorated. You can use plain white or silver platters for the food.

Why not create a vignette of a spring garden as the centerpiece? Use a flat pot filled with florist foam and a budding twig planted into it, spring flowers and moss covering the base, and a pretty ribbon tied around the pot. Or, you could also create a cake covered with green icing “grass” on the sides and different kinds of spring flowers on the top.

A perfect menu for this theme would be different courses made solely from spring specialties. Baby vegetables, for example, can be served with a warm bagna cauda and thin slices of baguettes. Grilled asparagus and salmon fillets make a perfect partner to a side dish of sauteed fern tops. And as a finish, a simple dessert of macerated mixed berries with orange custard is just right. Once you choose the best of the season, your menu can never be wrong.

Serve all of this with a new spring white wine or a non-alcoholic mixed juice punch accented with frozen green grapes and apple juice ice cubes that have edible flowers frozen inside. Frosting the glasses in the freezer adds a terrific finishing touch.

Choose the right favors for this. Why not give a package of tisanes and sugar cubes decorated with sugar flowers? Or a set of pressed Spring flowers would be wonderful, too.
